I doubt drugs or druglessness have much to do with it. Aging and mellowing are more likely culprits. The problem with Radiohead's recent music is a lack of ambition. They play like a band with nothing to prove to anyone, and are mostly doing it for the pleasure and because to not do it anymore would be Breaking Up The Band. In other words, their motivations and goals have dramatically shifted over the last few albums. Especially with Thom, I suspect, who was always the big fat ego in the band, in his own weird way, and has since become the big lack of ego in the band. You might point out his increasingly flamboyant stage presence (again, for Thom) as evidence of ego, but I actually believe the opposite: he's loosened up on stage because he just doesn't care about that sort of thing as much as he once did. Ditto for his increasingly sloppy performances. Age and family have diminished that unhealthy level of self-criticism that lends itself so well to writing and performing the kind of neurotically, obsessively composed music Radiohead used to be known for. Going out on a limb, I trace the first sign of their lessening ambition to the hiring of Nigel Godrich as producer of HTTT. Their initial decision was to go with a different producer, to get outside of their comfort zone and continue to grow. But the familiar proved too strong a draw and they ran back to the warm, reverb drenched arms of poppa Nigel. I think it's telling that HTTT's production is the poorest and most directionless to be found on a Radiohead album aside from Pablo Honey. The production of the last two albums has been better, but nestled neatly into their comfort zone. And the idea of Nigel being replaced in the future is all but unthinkable at this point, because Radiohead is no longer a band that shakes things up. You said it well.

yeah Radiohead doesn't seem to have it any more, but Termy still does.

Seeing Radiohead soon, should probably listen to the new songs. I prefer waiting for albums though.
Question: Did the song 'Lift' ever turn into another song that was released? I can't remember what it sounds like but used to love it in 2003 or thenabouts.

There was a 1996 live version, a 2001 (I think) live version, but it's never been properly recorded.

Some things about Radiohead last night: -setlist had pacing issues - run of four In Rainbows songs in a row to close out the mid-tempo first half was interminable, but the second half was amazing. -newer stuff doesn't generally work as well live as on record -Thom's dancing is more confident and constant than it used to be, in a good way - in Myxomatosis especially -Clive Deamer is more of a natural showman than Phil - I resent that. STOP TAKING ATTENTION AWAY FROM PHIL, CLIVE -Phil and Clive don't look as similar as I'd been led to believe -Arena gigs should be horrible, but their light show was just about up to the challenge (and it helps to be standing right in front of the stage) -Jonny is still awesome www.setlist.fm/setlist/radiohead/2012/o2-arena-london-england-63dd2e1b.html

saw a few videos. that bloom was pretty good. thom's voice was in good form.
there there > t-n-a > feral > P.A. had to rock hard. gutg sucks live but the rest of encore 1 was good. staircase sucks but then right place and idioteque can't go wrong with that.
you saw a good show. as good as it gets these days.
separater > videotape > nude had to suck though.
"-newer stuff doesn't generally work as well live as on record" no it doesn't. it's too slow.
"-Jonny is still awesome" yeah but he isn't playing the songs that let him show off his brilliant guitar skills.

there there > t-n-a > feral > P.A. had to rock hard. ... right place and idioteque can't go wrong with that. There There-Paranoid Android was the best period. I figure people have mixed views on Feral live but it REALLY worked for me. Not many were dancing around me though. I kept affecting Thom's moves. The whole gig has taken on a dreamlike aura - should have taken a camera to remind myself that this thing really happened. That arena is huge, the lights were amazing, and Radiohead were *right there*. Might be my favourite RH gig, although the first is probably hard to beat. During one of the mid-tempo songs, Separator or something, Ed spent most of the song doing a weird hand dance. It came to me in a flashback yesterday. Strange man. [EDIT: Not Separator. Probably Bloom, though can't find video evidence].

separater > videotape > nude had to suck though. I realised sometime during the IR section that there *had* to be at least a few hits around the corner, and they surpassed that. There was a focus on louder, more rhythmic older songs. Idioteque rising out of the ashes of EIIRP was awesome - had been turning to leave when it kicked off.

Anybody listen to Jonny's scores for There Will Be Blood and The Master? His queasy, dissonant arrangements lend a lot to the mood of those two films. More like what I'd imagined Jonny was going to do for Kid A, gleaning from '99-'00 recording notes about string parts alien from anything in rock music.

i just got and watched bodysong. it's really good and mostly because of the soundtrack. the films are good but the music holds them all together.
haven't seen the master yet. and haven't seen twbb in a long time.

Not quite Radiohead, but related: Isn't the Amok album cover just the best? If it was 2003, I'd totally make it my MSN avatar.

Album itself sounds like a Radiohead album before most of the ideas have been added, and before it becomes a lot more than the sum of those parts, i.e. not very good. But it's easy to say that. 'Dropped' is a bit 'Sit Down Stand Up' and there are some other neat things on there.

That was way harder than I thought it would be, had a few mental blocks. I didn't comment on that photo because I had already seen it so many places
